Dolores & John’s Home

Rose Hill, Bethesda, MD

A verdant life, in black and white.

Dolores and John came to us with the ambition of creating a family home that embraced their love for outdoor living. They envisioned an open, modern residence with elements that honored traditional vernacular detailing. Nestled on an outer suburban lot, the design's primary aim was to focus the family living spaces towards the property’s tree-lined backyard.

The nexus of the home’s layout is its indoor/outdoor lounge, strategically positioned to the side maintaining the landscaped views from the adjoining rooms. This lounge is enclosed in glass on three sides and can be fully opened to merge seamlessly with the exterior patio. The paver flooring draws the eye outward towards the yard and the exterior kitchen space, creating a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor spaces.

A modern home with classic charm.

The synthesis of modern and traditional aesthetic found on the exterior of the home is carried into its interior. Stepping into the home, a variety of spaces are discovered: from deep-toned, intimate rooms tailored for evening gatherings, to bright, airy spaces that encourage family interactions throughout the day. Natural materials play a key role in enhancing the home's ambiance, imparting a sense of visual warmth that softens the clean lines of the architecture and creates a comfortable and inviting atmosphere that balances contemporary style with classic charm.

An exploration of material, texture, and contrast.

The clean simple lines of the exterior façade are punctuated with moments of intricate detailing. The strategic integration of black and white architectural elements work to break down the scale of the structure, creating dynamic visual interest that evolves throughout the day with the shifting sunlight and shadows.

Along the rear of the home, a broad patio stretches the entire length, offering ample space for outdoor seating and entertaining. Extended waterfall steps descend to the expansive lawn, offering a safe, open area where children can freely play under the attentive gaze of their parents.

A quiet place to retreat, relax, and be restored.

Hidden away on the upper level of the residence, the family’s private quarters provide an atmosphere of calm and quiet. Within the various rooms the detailing becomes more restrained while still harmonizing with the color and material palette found throughout the main floor.

Conceived as a sanctuary within the home, the primary suite has a vaulted ceiling, dedicated coffee bar, and a private, covered balcony overlooking the yard below. The spacious ensuite bathroom incorporates a floating vanity and a generously-sized walk-in shower, providing a spa-like experience on a daily basis.

We have a very difficult time explaining our style, yet you guys really seem to get us, which we love. Your support through this entire process has been a godsend.
