Jens & Stine’s Home

Brookmont, Bethesda, MD

What started as a kitchen renovation became an opportunity to rethink the entire home.

The interior was opened up and the kitchen was repositioned at the crux of a new dining room, library sitting area, and outdoor living space. The center piece of the re-imagined space is a large kitchen island, created to float like a sculptural form paralleling the African hand-hewn-log bench anchored in the library sitting area.

The interior was brightened by including a wall of glass doors, replacing the old trim with modern white casing, and treating the oak floors with a white stain wash. As a counterpoint to the new white interior, the steel structure, required to open up the house, was exposed and painted an auburn orange.

On the upper level, we brightened and re-worked the existing primary bedroom suite.

The ensuite bath was opened up to the bedroom space and included a large walk-in shower and custom floating lavatory with a trough sink.  An aluminum tube shelf, salvaged from a Danish train by Stine, was installed and repurposed as a towel rack and hotelier.

As part of the redesign, the exterior façade of the house was modernized as well.

This modernization included a new window layout and siding pattern along with articulating wall sconces, painted to match the steel structure within. A new deck was extended into the rear lawn with bench seats integrated into the steps to allow for backyard hang-outs and impromptu plays.

We finally have a house where everything fits in, it's so personal. We love waking up every day in our new home.
