John & Bridget’s Home

Parkwood, Bethesda, MD

Scaled to blend with the neighborhood, and filled with unique and surprising details.

Needing more space, but not wanting to add another McMansion to their neighborhood, great care was taken in the renovation and expansion of John and Bridget’s 1950s-era brick rambler to conceal the added space within the new roofline and hidden from view in the backyard. The original post-war development house was completely gutted and reinvented as a cozy New England-style cottage.

The farm-table island is the central gathering space for the family within the home.

A glass-paneled kitchen cabinet invites the natural light of a nearby side window without losing any functionality or storage space. The integrated kitchen and family room is then connected to the adjacent screened porch with an over-sized glass door system that fully opens up to unite the two spaces, allowing for true indoor-outdoor living.

The rear façade creates a shadow play of architectural elements and varying siding types.

At the back wall of the house, a large bay window extends from the family room to the primary suite above, opening up the interior to views of the sprawling Rock Creek Park beyond. The walk-out screened porch and grilling deck connects down to the expansive backyard that serves as a playground and popular hang-out space for the neighborhood children.

We were pinched on space, but didn’t want to leave the neighborhood. The final design was outstanding, and provided exactly what we needed. The pairing of modern and traditional elements created a classic look that is awesome!
